Coating Epoxy Over Control Joints: Best Practices and Recommendations

When it comes to flooring, especially in high-traffic areas, control joints play a crucial role in managing the natural movement of concrete slabs

If you fill the joints with epoxy or a nonflexible epoxy joint sealer, it can crack. See example of picture below!

Recommended Approach

To mitigate the risk of cracking,  there are a few strategies to consider for your floor joints.

Here’s are the approaches that professionals often recommend:

  1. Apply Coating, Fill Joint Once Coating is Dry: One option is to leave the joints empty until the floor is fully coating. ArmorPoxy recommends using the RS-88 Polyurea caulk as it comes in a variety of colors if you want to seal the joints after the floor has been coated.
  2. Apply a Flexible Joint Sealant Before Coating: For a flexible joint, you can use ArmorPoxy's FLEXIBLE JOINT SEALANT before applying the epoxy. ArmorPox's flexible joint sealant is a 2 component hybrid polymer made of urethanes and epoxies. This product only comes in gray. For larger joints you can use foam 'backer rod' to support the joint filler.

  3. Leave Joints Empty: Many customers choose to leave the joints open to save time and money.
