When it comes to flooring, especially in high-traffic areas, control joints play a crucial role in managing the natural movement of concrete slabs
If you fill the joints with epoxy or a nonflexible epoxy joint sealer, it can crack. See example of picture below!
Recommended Approach
To mitigate the risk of cracking, there are a few strategies to consider for your floor joints.
Here’s are the approaches that professionals often recommend:
- Apply Coating, Fill Joint Once Coating is Dry: One option is to leave the joints empty until the floor is fully coating. ArmorPoxy recommends using the RS-88 Polyurea caulk as it comes in a variety of colors if you want to seal the joints after the floor has been coated.
-
Apply a Flexible Joint Sealant Before Coating: For a flexible joint, you can use ArmorPoxy's FLEXIBLE JOINT SEALANT before applying the epoxy. ArmorPox's flexible joint sealant is a 2 component hybrid polymer made of urethanes and epoxies. This product only comes in gray. For larger joints you can use foam 'backer rod' to support the joint filler.
-
Leave Joints Empty: Many customers choose to leave the joints open to save time and money.
